In alweer een oersaaie marathon-uitzending zijn afgelopen nacht de Oscars uitgereikt in Hollywood. Grote overwinnaar met 5 beeldjes (waaronder beste film, regisseur, en acteur) is de Franse ‘stomme’ film, The Artist. Of dit terecht is, weet ik niet. Net als meer dan 95% van de bioscoopgangers heb ik deze ode aan de cinema zonder geluid nog niet gezien. Wat wel vaststaat is dat de concurrentie redelijk zwak was, toch zeker bij de genomineerden voor ‘beste’ film. The Help, Extremely Loud & The Three of Life zijn zelfs archislechte films. Waarom vele betere prenten als The Ides of March, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Warrior, en Drive zelfs geen nominatie kregen, zal wel voor altijd een raadsel blijven? De andere ‘grote’ winnaar was Hugo van Martin Scorsese met 5 ‘technische’ Oscars. En ja deze kinderfilm/filmgeschiedenisles zag er ook verbluffend uit, maar de prijs voor beste visuele effecten had toch beter naar Rise of the Planet of the Apes gegaan voor het revolutionaire motion capture werk. Beste actrice werd -geeuw- Meryl Streep voor haar rol als Margaret Thatcher in het zwakke The Iron Lady. Niemand zal ontkennen dat Streep een sterke actrice is, maar de verdiende winnaar had zonder enige twijfel Rooney Mara geweest voor haar glansprestatie als Lisbeth Salander. Onze eigenste Rundskop (Bullhead) viel zoals te verwachten naast de prijzen. Beste buitenlandse film werd het Iraanse echtscheidingsdrama A Separation. Ook in deze categorie ontbreken straffe brokken cinema als het Braziliaanse Tropa De Elite 2, het Japanse 13 Assassins, en zeer zeker het Zuid-Koreaanse The Man From Nowhere. Maar goed, moge Michael R. Roskam en Matthias Schoenaerts uit hun nominatie een internationale carrière uitputten van het kaliber Paul Verhoeven/Rutger Hauer. Het is ze van harte gegund.
