Het mag niet verbazen dat The Walt Disney Company van één van de succesvolste film in de Belgische filmgeschiedenis een vervolg gaat maken. Wel, vervolg is veel gezegd, want Disney laat regisseur Barry Jenkins (If Beale Street Could Talk, Moonlight) een prequel maken om het succesvolle Lion King uit 2019.
“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” zei Jenkins in een persbericht. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”
The Lion King zorgde in 2019 voor een globale omzet van 1,65 miljard dollar waarvan België zo’n 14 miljoen euro bijdroeg. Wanneer The Lion King prequel wordt verwacht is nog niet duidelijk.
