Het ging uiteraard al de ronde, maar het is nu bevestigd. Voor een slordige 125 miljoen dollar heeft Amazon de internationale rechten opgekocht van de opvolger Coming to America 2 met Eddie Murphy.

Amazon is verheugd met het nieuws:

“Coming to America was a cultural phenomenon that is one of the most loved and celebrated comedies of all time,” vertelt Head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke in een persbericht. “Thanks to Eddie Murphy’s comedic genius along with the brilliant filmmakers, writers and fabulous cast, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this new adventure. We know audiences around the world will fall in love with this hilarious, joyful movie that will surely become a timeless favorite.”

Producent Kevin Misher voegt daar aan toe:

“What could be better than a return to Zamunda? We are so excited for Amazon Studios to bring Eddie Murphy and Coming 2 America to a worldwide audience where they can laugh again with characters they have loved for 30 years, and meet new ones that they will love for years to come.”

Coming 2 America stond oorspronkelijk op de lijst van eindejaarsreleases, maar vanwege de COVID-19 crisis werd geopteerd voor een lancering op stream. De volgende castleden komen terug in dit vervolg op Coming to America uit 1988:  Eddie Murphy als Akeem, Arsenio Hall als Semmi, James Earl Jones als King Jaffe Joffer, Shari Headley als Queen Lisa, John Amos als Cleo McDowell & Louie Anderson als Maurice. Nieuwe namen zijn Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Jermaine Fowler, Bella Murphy, Rotimi, KiKi Layne, Nomzamo Mbatha & Teyana Taylor. De film wordt geregisseerd door Craig Brewer (Dolemite Is My Name).
