Het was al een tijdje bekend dat AT&T op zoek was naar een alternatief voor zijn aankoop van Warner-, CNN-, Time-, HBO-assets een aantal jaren terug. Onlangs werd bekend gemaakt dat de mediatak van de Amerikaanse telco-operator ging fusioneren met Discovery en vandaag is er een nieuw bedrijf geboren tussen beide bedrijven: Warner Bros. Discovery, met de slogan The Stuff where Dreams Are Made Of.

David Zaslav, CEO van het nieuwe Warner Bros. Discovery, verklaart nader:

There are so many wonderful, creative and journalistic cultures that will make up the Warner Bros. Discovery family. We believe it will be the best and most exciting place in the world to tell big, important and impactful stories across any genre – and across any platform: film, television and streaming.”

De focus ligt op creativiteit en het verwerven van creatief talent:

The story of the Warner brothers is the story of everyone in our industry. Success is about creative talent in front of the screen and behind the screen, and fighting for the culture that creates that vision.”

In eerste plaats zal er gezocht worden naar synergieën tussen beide streamingdiensten Discovery+ & HBO Max om een gelijkaardig aanbod te kunnen bieden als de Disney-bundle met Disney Plus, ESPN & Hulu. Wat dit voor gevolgen zal hebben voor België is nog niet duidelijk.
