De kogel is door de kerk, de wereldwijde pandemie zorgt voor root in het eten van verschillende filmprofessionals waardoor ook The Academy zichzelf moet herevalueren. De Oscars 2021 zijn daarom officieel verplaatst naar 25 april 2021 en dat betekent dat heel wat filmceremonies momenteel hun agenda’s herbekijken. De BAFTA’s zullen daarom georganiseerd worden op 11 april 2020. Tot slot zullen de Golden Globes het awardseizoen aftrappen op 28 februari 2021, nota bene de dag dat de Oscars normaal georganiseerd zouden geworden.

“For over a century, movies have played an important role in comforting, inspiring, and entertaining us during the darkest of times. They certainly have this year. Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our Awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control,” vertelt Academy president David Rubin & CEO Dawn Hudson. “This coming Oscars and the opening of our new museum will mark an historic moment, gathering movie fans around the world to unite through cinema.”

Enkele maanden terug werd ook beslist dat de deelname voor films aan de Oscars is versoepeld naar VOD-releases en de film releases tot en met eind februari 2021 komen nog steeds in aanmerking voor een Oscar.

Of de awardshows al dan niet digitaal worden gehouden, is nog niet beslist.
