Ongelofelijk, de eerste teaser van de nieuwe Lord of the Rings: The Power of the Rings-serie, één van de duurste series aller tijde, werd maar liefst 257 miljoen keer bekeken op YouTube, Facebook, Twitter & andere videoplatformen in 24 uur tijd na de lancering tijdens de Superbowl 2022. Dat plaatst het op de 3de plaats tegenover Spider-Man: No Way Home & The Avengers: Endgame (bekijk de lijst hier). Wat een prestatie!

Amazon lost de eerste namen voor zijn nieuwste Lord of the Rings-serie die in 2021 verwacht wordt. Robert Aramayo uit Game of Thrones wordt Elrond en de jonge Australische Markella Kavenagh (Romper Stomper, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Cry) is gecast in de rol van Nori. Andere namen zijn Morfydd Clark (His Dark Materials, Crawl) als elf Galadriel, Nazanin Boniadi (Hotel Mumbai, Homeland) als Bronwyn, Tom Budge (The Pacific, The Proposition), Ismael Cruz Cordova (Miss Bala, Mary Queen of Scots) als de elf Arondir, Joseph Mawle (In the Heart of the Sea, Game of Thrones S7, The Cold Light of Day, Birdsong), Ema Horvath (The Gallows Act II) als Eärien, Tyroe Muhafidin (Caravan) als Theo, Sophia Nomvete als Princess Disa, Owain Arthur als Prince Durin IV, Megan Richards (Wanderlust), Dylan Smith (I Am the Night), Charlie Vickers (Medici: Masters of Florence) als Halbrand & Daniel Weyman (A Very English Scandal). Will Poulter (The Revenant, Midsommar, Bandersnatch) zoals eerder werd aangekondigd, valt uit de boot als castlid. Regie van de eerste 2 afleveringen is inmiddels in handen van de Spaanse regisseur J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls, Jurassic World 2: Fallen Kingdom, Penny Dreadful) en er is ook sprake dat Amazon consultants vanop de gewezen Game of Thrones-set aan boord neemt om de peperdure reeks van naar schatting 1 miljard dollar met nu al 5 seizoenen op te starten (seizoen 1 is nu al geraamd op 465 miljoen dollar).

Er is nog niet veel geweten over Amazon’s plannen om een Lord of the Rings-serie te starten, maar we krijgen al wel de eerste interactieve map te zien van Middle Earth. Klik op de map om meer gedetailleerd op zoek te gaan naar Middle Earth…

Nu Netflix dreigt heel wat content te verliezen door het terugtrekken van Disney, zet Amazon geleidelijk de aanval in. Amazon Prime Video heeft zo zijn eerste echt grote commerciële hit te pakken (vergelijkbaar met The Defenders-series door Marvel) door een televisieserie rond The Lord of the Rings te gaan distribueren via zijn streamingplatform. New Line Cinema & Warner Bros. die de film-franchise in handen heeft, gaan het uitvoerend werk blijven doen. Verdere details zijn er niet, dus geen cast- of regisseur-aankondigingen en geen release dates. We zullen het dus moeten doen met de recente Amazon België-aankondiging.
